Urdu is not an ethnic group but rather a collection of ethnic groups that find identity in these factors: Islamic religion, Persian cultural tradition, Urdu language, and the tradition of Muslim supremacy in northern India. They are primarily from Pakistan and India, but over recent years, many have migrated to the countries surrounding the Persian Gulf searching for better economic and educational opportunities. Urdu culture is very intertwined with Islamic life. A pillar of their societies is the belief that they must maintain honor for their families and not engage in anything that may bring shame to their community.
Engagement // What’s Happening Now
The Urdu are found in 4 different countries in the Middle East. There are very few believers. Many Urdu believe Western Christians to be pagan worshippers and are leery of Westerners entering their communities. Workers are needed to live out true Christianity among the Urdu.
Visit Eurasia Pipeline to join in reaching the Urdu in the Middle East.
Sustainability // The Bigger Story
The vision of Live | Dead is to train workers plant churches among every unreached people group. Pray, asking the Holy Spirit if he is leading you to plant churches among the Urdu.
Partnership // Move Beyond
Please spend a few minutes in prayer for:
- Only 0.01% of the Urdu population in the Middle East follows the gospel of Jesus, pray for the few Urdu believers that they may be empowered by the Holy Spirit.
- There are very few workers among the Urdu, pray for more workers to join in the efforts to reach the Urdu living in the Middle East.
- Some Urdu communities still practice “purdah”, seclusion of women, pray for women to have opportunities to hear the Gospel.
- The Urdu are suspicious of Western Christians, pray for God to soften the hearts of the Urdu so that they may be receptive to the message of salvation.
