There are over 85 million Shaikhs in India. Shaikhs are thought to be descendants of Arabs who arrived in India in the 8th century. Their ancestors are known to have brought Islam to the country of India during that time. Shaikhs can be divided into 5 different communities. The first three are Siddiks, Farukis and Abbasi, people belonging to these communities are usually descendants of Arabs. The last two communities are comprised of the Christis and Kuraishis, those in these communities are usually converts to Islam. Shaikhs are very devout Muslims and the number of Christians is unknown.

 Engagement // What’s Happening Now

Currently, the number of Christians is unknown. Prayer is key to reaching the Shaikhs in India. Live Dead calls for believers to join in the church planting effort through prayer. Pray Band is Live Dead’s prayer network that groups three people to pray for a specific church planting team and three unreached people groups in that team’s country. You can sign up on their Live Dead Pray page.

Sustainability // The Bigger Story

There are over 170 million Muslims in India, over 85 million are Shaikh. Global Initiative held a Jonah Initiative training in Bangalore, India with 40 students. The training prepared these students to reach Muslim neighbors and friends with the love of God.
