Mocheno of Italy

The Mocheno are native to Italy and live in the northern region near Switzerland and Austria. Mocheno is on the verge of becoming a dead language with only 2000 remaining speakers. In Trentino, Mocheno is the officially recognized language and it is taught in schools and can be seen on street signs. The language is thought to be similar to Bavarian or German. Their livelihood and religion is similar to other Italians

Engagement // What’s Happening Now

Randy Hurst explains that “in 22 of Europe’s 36 countries, less than 1 percent are born-again Christians.” Despite the strong history of Christianity in Europe, Christianity is on a steady decline. Though the Mocheno are in a heavily Christianized country, there are no known Christians among them.”

Sustainability // The Bigger Story

There are 1300 Assemblies of God churches in Italy. With the revival in Italian churches and the immigration from eastern Europe, Africa, and Asia, there are over 500,000 born-again believers in Italy.

Partnership // Move Beyond

  • Pray missionaries are sent to minister to the Mocheno.
  • Pray God blesses and expands the Assemblies of God in Italy and that churches are planted in Trentino to minister to the Mocheno.
  • Pray that the hearts of the Mocheno may be open to receive the gospel.
