The Maranao, Lanao are from the Philippines. Their name, Maranao, means “people of the lake”. The majority of the Maranao, Lanao live near Lake Lanao but due to the lack of job opportunities, many have begun relocating to Manila. The primary source of income for many of the Maranao, Lanao are agriculture and fishing. The Maranao enjoy expressing and sharing their cultures. They express their culture through textiles, metalwork, woodcraft, and architecture. Typically, the textile worn will hint towards the social status of the person wearing the garment. The “awang” that the Maranao build is considered one of the most unique and elaborate boat structure. The Maranao are predominantly Muslim but are known for blending their ancient religions with Islamic practices.

Engagement // What’s Happening Now

In the early 1900s, a church plant was established in the Maranao region. Even though many throughout the years have tried to establish a church the Maranao remain unreached. Today, Asia Pacific Media reaches out to all the Philippines and Asia Pacific with a message of Christ through radio broadcasts, films, and other platforms. Their message addresses life’s challenges and provides an answer in Christ. Pray that their reach extends to the Muslim Maranao.

 Sustainability // The Bigger Story

More than half the population is under the age of 20, and 24 percent of children are unable to attend school. Asia’s Little Ones has several projects aimed at helping these children by providing nutrition, children’s homes, and education. Pray that through this compassion ministry many Maranao children will know the love of God.

 Partnership // Move Beyond
