The Mahratta are part of a ruling upper-class caste. They claim to be descendants of one of the 4 ancient royal castes. The Mahratta live in the Maharashtra region of India. Many of the Mahratta are farmers or work tending to the land but there is a large majority who work in politics and hold public offices.
The Mahratta practice Hinduism. They worship Shiva and his wife Parvati as the family gods, but they worship many other gods as well. They also believe in spirit possession and ghosts.
Engagement // What’s Happening Now
There are no known Christians among the Mahratta. There are over 30 million Mahratta in India. The capital city of Maharashtra is Mumbai. Mumbai is the home of Bollywood and is one of the largest cities in the world. Mumbai is notorious for the lucrative sex trade industry in the red light district. It’s estimated that the number of victims of sex trafficking in India is in the millions. In Mumbai alone there are over 1100 brothels and 100+ pickup points. Bombay Teen Challenge seeks to rescue trafficked women in Mumbai. They accomplish this through outreach teams that minister to the women and children by bringing food. Through patience and persistence, they may be able to establish trust between them and rescue them. Pray for the Mahratta who are involved or are trafficked into this horrific industry.
Sustainability // The Bigger Story
Without prayer, it will be impossible to reach the Mahratta of India. There are over 30 million Mahratta and no known believers. The Common Table seeks to motivate and encourage believers to go, give and pray. They state, “Establishing the gospel in the last and least-reached areas of the world will require complete commitment of the global church.”
Partnership // Move Beyond
Please spend a few minutes in prayer for:
- Pray teams will be sent to the millions of Mahratta who have never heard the gospel.
- Pray churches are planted in Mahratta communities and that a Christian community will be established.
- Pray for ministries such as Project Rescue and Bombay Teen Challenge as they minister to those who are trafficked.
