Laz, Lazuri of Central Eurasia

The Laz, Lazuri, also known as the Mingrelian, live in Central Eurasia in a region near that borders Georgia. In folklore, the Mingrelian are known for plundering and piracy as well as kidnapping until the 1800s. Today’s Mingrelian are respected businessmen and trustworthy people.

Being near the Black Sea and living in the fertile valleys, the Mingrelian traditionally worked in fishing, farming, and agriculture. Some continue to live semi-nomadic lifestyle but many works as doctors, teachers, businessmen and other urban jobs. Under the Ottoman Empire, most Mingrelian converted to Islam and the majority practice Islam till this day.

Live Dead’s primary purpose is to resource and send church planting teams into Muslim contexts. The Launch Team is their center in Central Eurasia to prepare new workers to abide in Jesus in a Muslim context, acquire tools and resources, and gain understanding and passion for proclaiming the gospel cross-culturally.

Sustainability // The Bigger Story

Prayer is of utmost necessity in reaching Muslim people groups like the Mingrelian with the gospel. Eurasia community has a prayer initiative called Pray4Nations. On their website is a 31-day prayer challenge that invites believers to take part in the mission of God through prayer.

Partnership // Move Beyond

Please spend a few minutes in prayer for:

  • Pray for how God may be calling you to participate in reaching Muslim people groups.
  • Pray church planting teams are sent to Mingrelian communities.
  • Pray for the Christian Mingrelian who are ostracized for their faith.
  • A Bible in their native language has not been completed pray for workers who may take on this arduous task.
