Many of the Khmer in Cambodia have experienced war, famine, and displacement. In Cambodia alone, there are about 14 million Khmer with only 1.70% of the population Christian and 90% considering themselves Buddhist. The Khmer make up between 80 and 90 percent of the population of Cambodia. Most Khmer are Buddhists, but their religious practices also include elements of Hinduism, ancestor worship and animism. There are many youth and children, half of the population is under the age of 15. Many Khmer people live in rural villages and are rice farmers or fishermen.
Engagement // What’s Happening Now
Even though the Khmer in Cambodia have experienced much suffering there is hope. There has been a rise in faith-centered children’s homes and schools which have opened to bring light into the life of many children through faith-based teaching and literature. This has opened the door for families to hear the Gospel and become followers of Jesus. Adi’s* son was given a Book of Hope through one of these schools. Adi* found the book which served as a catalyst for Adi to seek a church and encounter Jesus. His family came to Christ and he is now a pastor reaching those who are unreached.

Sustainability // The Bigger Story
The AG has opened a Bible Institute which has graduated 43 Cambodians and recognized 49 pastors. The training of nationals and natives is crucial to effectively reaching the Khmer in Cambodia. Pray for the faculty, staff, and students of this institute. Pray for church planting movements among the Khmer to come as a result of the training and education that these students are receiving.
Partnership // Move Beyond
Please spend a few minutes in prayer for:
- Pray for workers to consider partnering with AGWM and the national church in Cambodia to create a sustainable church-planting movement among this unreached people group.
- Pray for Khmer believers that they would reach out with the love of Christ and that they may persevere despite the suffering they may experience.
- Pray for the many children who have been sold as sex workers to meet their family’s needs. That they may find rescue and hope in Jesus.
