Karaite in Israel

The Karaites practice a form of Judaism that was deemed so different from Orthodox Jews that the Russian Tsars and the Nazis did not refer to them as real Jews. The Karaites believe they are real Jews and adhere to some of the same practices as Jews. The primary difference is they do not accept rabbinic teachings. They believe that many Jewish practices should be viewed as metaphorical not literal, such as wearing phylacteries attached to their arms and foreheads. Their origin is unknown but on theory is they were a Jewish sect started in Baghdad by Anan ben David at the beginning of the eighth century.
