The Betawi live in areas surrounding the city of Jakarta and are considered the original inhabitants of this region. There are close to 7 million Betawi with less than 2% being evangelical Christians. The vast majority of the Betawi practice Islam with roots in animistic practices and guide their daily life in accordance with Islamic teachings. They seek to ensure their children will carry on religious traditions by enrolling them in Islamic schools. Betawi people are very familial and value hospitality above other traits.
Engagement // What’s Happening Now
Many of the Betawi live in urban regions and have access to Christian radio programming. These radio shows have a follow-up ministry which allows listeners to request visits from Christian counselors or seek spiritual counsel via text messaging. Pray that the Betawi people may be drawn to listen to these radio shows and to seek out the truth that is found in Jesus.
Sustainability // The Bigger Story
Church planting movements have been growing in Indonesia. There is a goal to build 100 churches which will reach the unreached in this region. Pray for the national church to be strengthened and emboldened as this vision of reaching the least reached unfolds. Pray for receptive hearts to the gospel.

Partnership // Move Beyond
Please spend a few minutes in prayer for:
- Pray that the Holy Spirit would inspire and call believers to minister to the Betawi.
- Urbanization and cultural shifts continue to occur among the Betawi. Pray for open doors among the vast number of this people group who have never heard the name of Jesus.
- Currently, a Bible does not exist in the Betawi language. Pray for a complete Bible translation in their language.
