The Azerbaijani of Azerbaijan number about 9 million across Central Asia and Europe. The largest number of Azerbaijanis are in their home country of Azerbaijan. The Azerbaijan people are devout followers of Islam and find their identity in Islam and not their nationality. They believe that it is more important to be a part of the spiritual community of Islam, or Ummah, than for them to have their own country. Distinct from people groups and countries which surround them, Azerbaijanis are less restrictive towards women and even have women in offices of political power.
Engagement // What’s Happening Now
Due to their geographical placement, the Azerbaijani people are seen as a “gateway” people which can reach their own communities and the people groups surrounding them. Ali, * was part of a gang and was living a life of violence when Jesus appeared to him in a dream. Since then Ali has given his life to Christ and now lives a life of peace. God has used Ali to pastor and plant churches not only in Azerbaijan but among the Azeris in Georgia, Iran, and Russia.
Sustainability // The Bigger Story
In recent years, the population of Azerbaijani believers has jumped from 7,000 to 14,000. While this is a significant increase there is still much work to be done. Efforts to teach and train believers among the Azerbaijani’s are underway. The Azerbaijani people are also being reached through different compassion ministries which have opened doors for the gospel to be proclaimed.
Partnership // Move Beyond
Please take a few minutes to pray for the following:
